A Mentawai mutiny??

Folks, we have a developing situation on our hands here at the Kandui resort. See, the surf went flat yesterday and by flat I mean FLAT; not "flat" by Mentawai standards, but just flat. Today is just as bad and it's forecasted to be flat or small for a few more days before a new swell shows up, but even that swell is pretty small and the direction isn't optimum, especailly with the relentless winds, so the future looks sort of bleak. The long range forecast doesn't look too good, although it looks like it's picking up next week into some pretty good conditions by the last few days of our stay, on paper.

So, 2 of the guys staying here (both Aussies and both proably the 2 best surfers...the flat out rip) are drumming up interest in the notion of taking the charter boat sitting in our harbor here (waiting to take us back next Friday) and either using it for a week and sailing to the South Mentawai's by where Macaroni's, HT's, Rag's, etc. are located as there is supposedly swell down there or rather more than there is here; it's certainly not firing, optimum conditions. Or, taking it back to Padang early and then catching a flight possibly to Bali or Lombok or down to Java as those places, too, have surf. Both options are going to cost more money, possibly a hell of a lot more depending on what our options are.

I'm stuck betwen a rock and a hard place, here. 1/2 of me came on this trip to get some relaxation and clarity and just hang out in a beautiful place and experience Indonesia. The other half flew this far and to a place this remote to score fantastic surf which certainly isnt happening right now and looks like it's not happening in the near future and might not happen at all; you never know. Don't get me wrong, there still are a couple options here and they are fun but about as fun as I could have at home if it were the same size and an empty lineup.

There seems to be support for this mutiny as most of the boys here are frothing for Mentawai magic and are easily swayed as they may not have a dual purpose on this trip, like I do. Frankly, I think I'd rather stay here and keep my fingers crossed that we get some more favorable conditions than spend a week on a dirty boat or have to play hopscotch across the islands of Indonesia looking for surf.

So, keep your fingers crossed for us and pray for some surf and less winds!! Stay tuned...we should have resolution in the next couple days, be it here or somewhere else in Indo.

  • Hi Bry! Sounds to me like the universe wants you to get some quality think time - you did put that out there as one of your purposes for this particular trip at this moment in your lifetime. Whatever you do - make it your own decision and go with it! Remember the moments - enjoy each one - they are all we have. I love you! Mom
