Final Thoughts

Well, the day is upon us; time for me to leave HB for a little while and go to a place far, far away. Am I ready? No...not at all. Do I care? No...not at all. LOL! It's not the physically being ready like having everything packed or forgetting something or what not, it's more the being ready for what I'm going to see and experience and learn. I think no matter how hard you prepare yourself you're never going to be ready to go to a world for the first time that is so different from yours and so far away; lest we forget the surf which is about as opposite as surf can be from the daily grind in HB.

But past all of that I'm stoked as ever to go on this trip; this blog doesn't even scratch the surface of my current stoke level. The anticipation has been killing me for weeks and as I type this the counter just clicked over to 16 hours until I take off. Wow. All this planning, time, anticipation and work comes to fruition in 16 hours as I board a 777 to Tokyo for the first leg of the journey, and what a journey it promises to be.

So what am I gonna do there besides surf? Good question. First and foremost I plan on learning a lot more about Bryan Mills; who I am, where I'm going, where I want to go, where I've been, what I want, what I don't want. It sounds strange but I'm going 9000+ miles from home to find myself. It's been a trying year, albeit mostly good times for most of the last 10 months but the last couple months have been tough and really opened my eyes to who I am, or rather, who I'm not. I've felt like a ship without it's compass for some time now and I want to find that focus, inspiration and happiness that's usually ever-present in my daily life but has been off and on for a while now. I'd also like to challenge myself throughout the trip like surfing in conditions and sizes that are out of my comfort zone and taking those leaps of faith where you can really learn what's inside of you and bring out courage and bravado you didn't know you had or that had been sitting dormant since you were a little kid. Hell, just the trip itself is taking a big leap of faith. This is my first trip all alone where I'm not meeting someone or traveling with someone and it's to the other side of the globe in a culture that's as opposite as ours as you can get on a small island 75 miles off the coast of another island. Screw surfing leaps of faith, how about 'dem apples??

Past all that "serious" stuff I'll be reading a bunch, writing, making new friends, swimming, exploring, you name it! My flights will more than likely involve a ton of music listening and DVD watching as well as getting to know a new computer game I've started playing called Civilization IV; Hoyle card games and casino games are a given on any flight I take. I've got an 11 hour layover in Singapore and the first 6 hours should be spent at the hotel located inside the airport for some rest and a shower. The remainder of the time will be spent shopping in the myriad of shops they have inside the airport; no need to clear customs. From there I take a short(er) flight to Padang then stay at the beautiful (no joke) Bumiminang Hotel the night and then hop on a ferry the next day to my new home for the next 11 days: the Kandui Resort.

So, that's about it. The wait is over. At this time tomorrow I'll be...well...actually I'll still be over the Pacific Ocean en route to Tokyo in a 777...BUT...at this time tomorrow plus about 3 hours I'll be in Tokyo :) To all that have visited here over the last month or so I thank you for your support and for those that just showed up (as well as my loyal current audience) hang on...we're just getting started...

Damn it feels good to be a surfer...

  • I truly wish that you find whatever it is you are looking for...

(this is one of my fave songs...just wanted to share it with you)

"I hope that days come easy and moments pass slow,
and each road leads you where you wanna go,
and if you're faced with a choice, and you have to choose,
I hope you choose the one that means the most to you.
And if one door opens to another door closed,
I hope you keep on walkin' till you find the window,
if it's cold outside, show the world the warmth of your smile,

    But more than anything,
My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
your dreams stay big, your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
and while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
    Yeah, this, is my wish.

I hope you never look back, but ya never forget,
all the ones who love you, in the place you left,
I hope you always forgive, and you never regret,
and you help somebody every chance you get,
Oh, you find God's grace, in every mistake,
and you always give more than you take.

    But More than anything
My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
your dreams stay big, your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
and while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
    Yeah, this, is my wish."
